Yesterday’s National Basketball Association (NBA) game between the Golden State Warriors and the Milwaukee Bucks once again featured the brilliance of last season’s runner-ups. But one highlight that Filipinos should’ve taken notice of in yesterday’s game was Concert King Martin Nievera’s singing of the U.S. anthem before the tip-off as part of the NBA’s first-ever Filipino Heritage Week festivities which took place from March 15-18 (U.S. time).
Last Thursday on Umagang Kay Ganda, Martin talked about the idea of him singing in an NBA game. “I’m very proud because not only do I represent the Filipino people of the world, I represent TFC, which is the ABS-CBN of the world…This is a big moment for all singers as well, I’m sure other singers will be asked to do this, and we have to thank the Warriors for always paying tribute to the Filipino people who do so much for the Warriors,” said Martin. Indeed, it was a big moment as part of the festivities included NBA stars such as the Warriors’ Steph Curry donning Philippine-inspired shirts.

Martin also admitted that it’s a dream come true for him to sing in an NBA game, more so, in a game that features the team that he supports and represents the place where he grew up in. Through balitangamerica.tv, Martin said he’s cherishing this rare opportunity. “Oh my God, this is a dream come true for any singer, for any person to have anything associated with their basketball team and their favorite Bay Area…I mean, I grew up here… so there’s a lot riding on this.”
The Concert King added that the honor is not just exclusively his, but to every Filipino as well. “As a Filipino singer who’s being doing this for 34 years, I’m just so blessed that I was alive to see the day when not only a Filipino was honored, but the Filipino,” he said. In yesterday’s game, the Warriors ended up winning, but last week was definitely a huge victory for Filipinos all over the world.
It may seem that Karlos is out of place in One Music PH because he’s someone who can’t live without sports. Until of course, he realized that he is equally passionate with music as well. He may not admit it just yet, but Karlos loves Davie Bowie very much. Oh, and he runs a barbershop too.
