Since building a massive following from different parts of the world, his Filipino fans have finally got the ultimate chance to see Shawn Mendes perform live here in Manila as he held a one-night concert last Saturday night, March 18, at the Mall of Asia Arena as part of his Illuminate world tour. With thousands of screaming Filipino fans in attendance, the atmosphere couldn’t have been more appropriate for the 18-year-old Canadian’s first ever visit to Manila.
Shawn opened the show with something big, quite literally, as it was his 2015 song “Something Big” that got things off. That performance certainly lightened up the mood which is exactly what the energetic and enthusiastic fans needed. There were no fancy gimmicks, and even Shawn’s wardrobe was humble with him just wearing shirt and pants, and of course, a guitar in hand. With the lights all directed at him, it was clear that last Saturday night was all about Shawn and his music. And that’s all that mattered, as there was a sense of intimacy between the young Canadian and his sea of Filipino fans in spite of the grand venue.

He certainly did not disappoint as Shawn performed many of his hits from the Illuminate album such as the widely popular “Treat You Better,” “Lights On,” “Ruin,” and “Mercy” wherein everyone at the arena sang their hearts out together with their idol on stage. But while the fans were enjoying the concert, the show also served as a validation of the extraordinary musical gifts that Shawn possesses. Not only did he prove that he’s one of the most sought after young music artists in the world thanks to his good looks, but he’s extremely versatile with him showcasing his guitar and piano skills last Saturday night. Of course, fans all over the world wouldn’t have connected with his songs if it weren’t for his brilliant songwriting as well, and the Filipino audience definitely got a first-hand experience of that. For that reason, a fan of Shawn’s Arlyn Baasis said that the Canadian’s concert was worth the wait even after getting rescheduled, and that she’s already looking forward to his return here. “I may say it was worth the wait. I mean, Shawn is a great performer. The concert was amazing. I hope he comes back soon!” said Baasis.

Another loyal fan Alyssa echoed Baasis’ sentiment saying that “he surely is a very talented young man, who knows how to write his own songs, to make very catchy lyrics and to convey heartfelt songs to his crowd,” and that’s why many Filipino fans like her adore the 18-year-old. That’s why when Shawn concluded his show with the song “Stitches,” there were mixed emotions of sadness because the concert was coming to a close, but also of deep bliss because it’s not every night that you get to see and sing along with your music idol that you’ve waited months or even years to finally arrive. Well, Shawn has indeed arrived with a bang, and there’s good reason to be optimistic that he’ll come back given the magnificent reception he got last Saturday.

It may seem that Karlos is out of place in One Music PH because he’s someone who can’t live without sports. Until of course, he realized that he is equally passionate with music as well. He may not admit it just yet, but Karlos loves Davie Bowie very much. Oh, and he runs a barbershop too.
