You’ve probably already heard their name or watched a video (or two or three) on Facebook and YouTube, but last night, the mighty Agsunta traded in their cozy studio for a visit to One Music Live. Here, they treated us to a set filled with unique renditions of tracks from Sugarfree, Hale, Soapdish, and Kitchie Nadal, as well as some of their own original tracks.
Check it out below:
Yes, despite rumors to the contrary, their name stems not from ‘sugatan,’ – kudos to whoever thought of that, though – but from the name of their teacher, Agnes Asunta.
The group, composed of Jireh Singson, Mikel Arevalo, Josh Planas, and Stephen Arevalo, has made quite a name for themselves after posting notable covers of OPM classics. In fact, when asked to describe their sound, they simply say: “Pinoy.” To date, their Facebook page has amassed a following of more than 100,000 dedicated fans and followers.
Agsunta has also been known for their collaborations with other musicians. Most notable, they tell us, are the times when an artist has to veer away from his/her own genre and adjust to the sound of the band, resulting in a truly unique cover. Their example? Reese Lansangan rapping in their cover of Upuan by Gloc-9.
Despite their popularity doing covers, however, Agsunta also shares that they also want to be known for their original tracks like “Patawad Na” and “Liwanag,” which they played during the live session. Their plans for this year involve creating even more of those original tracks, which can hopefully be compiled into an album. “Gusto namin na makilala din kami, na alam ng mga tao na meron din kaming original songs." (“We want people to know us, for them to know that we also have original songs.”)

Writer/photographer/non-musician that hopes to promote local independent music. Probably hanging out at a gig at this very moment...
