2022 is the year that SB19 cemented their status as the top ppop act in a brutally competitive space that doesn’t lack new blood, new talent and noteworthy contenders. They broke records, sold out events, and toured the world.
What keeps the group on top? I think we need to see the last releases they made to see...
Ken Suson aka FELIP spent the latter part of 2021 and the early half of 2022 pushing his solo material. Two divergent songs that shows how impressive his range as a songwriter and as an artist is. "Palayo" is a slick, groovy, confrontational and bittersweet bilingual love song while "Bulan" is a jagged, angst-ridden song that revolves around our national folklore and ancient deities.
SB19's acknowledged "pinuno" PABLO started 2022 with a bang. "La Luna" is a cryptic, angry and motivated song that swims in vitriol. PABLO's delivery here borders on a psychological approach, with a flow worthy of Ol' Dirty Bastard and Wu-Tang Clan.
SB19 - "WYAT (Where Ya At?)"
The 80's-influenced retro music themed hit underlines an ambition to stretch boundaries and cross generations. It can both transport you through memory lane and give you a whiff of futuristic pop music.
SB19 - "Nyebe"
The track is an evocative slow song that moves our hearts—giving us the aura of affection, yearning, and melancholy. “Nanlalamig ang bisig / May kaba pa sa ‘king dibdib / Marinig lang ang ‘yong tinig / Matutunaw din lahat ng nyebe…” This poignant tune is proof that “MAPA” was no fluke.
While the ppop universe doesn't lack of great, talented artists who have mastered the syllabus and the template, SB19 lords over all of them by creating their own with an intangible edge to it. Whether it's dynamic upbeat pop songs such as "Bazinga" and "What?" or poignant lyrical masterpieces such as "MAPA" and "Nyebe", it is fair to deduce that Ken Suson, Pablo Nase and the rest of SB19 are pop artists and visionaries of a high order.
