Andrew E., or Andrew Espiritu, is so back into the scene. Maybe not exactly into the music scene but still in the limelight as he is part of the current top-rating primetime teleserye Dolce Amore.
In one gathering, the rap icon said he realized why he was picked to get the role of Uge Simeon, the biological father of Liza Soberano's character Serena.
"Kaya pala ako kinuha dito para pag may gatherings, mapapakanta ako ng libre," he told in jest.
In the very first and impromptu open mic sessions held few days before the series aired its pilot episode, Andrew E. showed why he is Andrew E. -- one of the most remarkable rappers in the Philippines.
Recalling what his fellow cast member Kean Cipriano, who is also the frontman of OPM band Calla Lily, have shared: "Ibang klase 'yan si Andrew E."
"Kapag may gig, tapos kunwari si Andrew E. ang susundan mo, ang hirap. Kasi ubos na ang energy ng mga tao dahil tumodo na sa kanya lahat," said Kean, who plays Pinggoy in the series, the brother of Enrique Gil's character Tenten.
Andrew E. was a Los Angeles-based DJ until he was discovered by Ramon "RJ" Jacinto, in the early 1990s, the time he released his debut single "Humanap Ka Ng Panget."
His career branched out when he began to star in comedy films based on his songs including "Humanap Ka ng Panget," "Andrew Ford Medina: Huwag Kang Gamol," "Mahirap Maging Pogi," and "Alabang Girls."
In 1995, he established Dongalo Wreckords, an independent rap label which has discovered and produced new rap talents like the rap group Salbakuta.
The 48-year-old rapper has also collaborated with artists like Sharon Cuneta, Joey de Leon, Regine Velasquez, Francis M., Ogie Alcasid, Janno Gibbs, Death Threat, Salbakuta, and a whole lot more.
Andrew E.'s music will always be part of the Filipino culture.
