A few days after his successful blind auditions, we were able to speak with The Voice Kids UK participant Jarren Garcia, to ask him a few questions about his recent performance, as well as congratulate him on a job well done.
We started off by asking him if his song choice during his performance—“Just The Way You Are” by Billy Joel—held any significance to him as a musician. He agreed, saying that the song really does speak to him about something he’s always believed in: being true to yourself no matter what happened, and no matter how circumstances around you changed, especially in a judgmental society.
It was a pleasant surprise to hear something as wise and profound as that, especially considering how young he was as a performer.
In line with his advice, he also claimed that a musician that truly inspired him was Stevie Wonder. Wonder, who was blind, “had to overcome a lot of challenges” to become successful, and for Jarren, Stevie Wonder’s life and music was truly inspiring.
Asked who in the Philippines he wanted to collaborate with, he quickly said that he wanted to make music with Darren Espanto, citing him as another inspiring musician worth aspiring to become. According to Jarren, despite not having won, Espanto still became a successful musician in the Philippines. Jarren also remarked how “Jarren and Darren” sounded like a great name for a duo.
To close our quick conversation, we asked him how important music was today, in the context of a global pandemic. “It’s an escape from reality, and it puts people in a lighter mood,” he said, simply and succinctly.
Come to think of it, “Jarren x Darren” would make a great album name.
