What do you get when you compose and produce a song for queens? Not one, not two, but three videos to celebrate them!
The dance pop-funk single “Yas Queen'' featuring neo-soul singer Dani Idea of DANIDEA was written, composed, and produced by Jensen Gomez himself. Having grown up surrounded by queens such as his mother, sisters, and friends, he wanted to write a song inspired from and dedicated to them. Although he initially wrote “Yas Queen” for another recording artist to perform, Jensen ended up using this as his carrier single for his Phases Vol. 2 EP because of the positive message he wants to advocate -- self-love, confidence, and empowerment to anyone and everyone who identifies themselves as queens!
Staying true to its essence of “Yas Queen” being a song for and of queens, Jensen Gomez bows down from the spotlight and lets queens reign our screens for the lyric video, dance video, and music video of the single.
Just as the song goes, “I’m a queen and I’m having such a good time!”, the lyric video for “Yas Queen” shows the Idea sisters having the time of their lives while they sing their hearts out regardless if they’re in pajamas or sporting their ‘90s outfit in their rooms by themselves. What does the lyric video tell us? Queens don’t need kings to have a good time, they are more than fine on their own.
Fitting of a queen’s description, the dance video of “Yas Queen” exudes grace, power, confidence, and beauty as top Filipina ballerina Denise Parungao-Phillips captivates us with her long lines, strong jumps, and enjoyable moves. Using dance as her form of expression, Denise is all smiles as she boldly dances on a rooftop to confidently shout to the world that she’s a queen and she’s not afraid to show it -- barefaced, sweat, scars, and all. What’s the message behind the dance? As you are, you’re perfect and more than enough to be a queen.
Jensen Gomez being a true king, lets his queen, Dani Idea, shine in the "Yas Queen" music video. Here we see Dani slaying different queen personas from preppy to chic to ‘80s aerobics extravaganza while being a whole mood for three minutes. As Jensen Gomez stands beside her in some shots, we see a king supporting a queen in her element -- as it should be!
What’s the main message of “Yas Queen”? You may be wearing different crowns, but are all queens nonetheless.
“Yas Queen” by Jensen Gomez feat. Dani Idea is the carrier single of Phases Vol. 2, Jensen’s second EP of the Phases trilogy. This volume shows Jensen's producer side. It starts with "Yas Queen", then just as you’re about to bust a move, the mood drastically changes from light to heavy once the next track, “From My Window”, plays and you hear trance-like chants and Switch of Assembly Generals spitting out bars about the blackhole that is brought about the pandemic leading you to watch life pass you by from your window. After breaking a sweat from that heart- thumping rap and hip-hop single, Jensen Gomez and R&B soul singer Seonna slow it down and closes the sound trip with trap soul track, “Sprung”, a bedroom love song that will seduce you to turn the lights down low and turn up the speakers as you do body waves to its lo-fi beats.
"Sonically medyo mas bouncy ang Volume 2," Jensen said in an online press conference. "But more than that, for Volume 2 I wanted to highlight the songwriter-producer side of me, which is why I feel blessed that Switch, Dani, and Seonna were available to collaborate here. I always get asked who my dream collaborations are, and since I did the whole album here at home where I'm sitting right now I had the freedom to collaborate, not just with the guests, but even the ones who played instruments here. Si Dani, I've always been a fan of hers ever since Saguijo days pa, so I really wanted to make a track with her, sobrang fitting ng 'Yas Queen' kay Dani kasi she can really sing, 'yun ang pinakamalupit doon. Volume 2 was really more for the collaborative process. And also, because people's attention spans are limited because of the pandemic and social media, we wanted to show people what we can do. It's a fun endeavor for us and a whole journey na hindi pa din tapos, but we're doing it 'cause we love it."
When asked about if he had more dream collaborations, he answered, "Until matapos ang album, 'yun na muna ang dream. Thee dream is to make this work and make this a reality. Ang weird lang kasi mag-name drop, pero sige...Si Ninno, from Logiclub, he rapped from one song. Si Earl of Manila, he did a song with me, and kasama din si Seonna doon. Si Rienne, who's also with Off the Record is in the album. So I think 'yun na muna ang dream, to finish this album and put this together. In the future, ang dream ko na maka-collab is Armi (from UDD) in one song, I think okay na ko 'dun."
