There were a lot of memorable moments in last night’s One Music Live Summer Jam, and among them was the set by local band Mayonnaise – composed of Monty Macalino, Shan Regalado, Carlo Servano, Nikki Tirona and Maan Furio – who finally got that rare chance of performing their hit song “Kathryn” right in front of no other than Kathryn Bernardo herself who was standing right next to Daniel Padilla beside the stage. As part of their set, Mayonnaise performed the songs “Tayo Na Lang Dalawa,” “Jopay,” “Laklak,” and of course, “Kathryn.” After the show, One Music PH had a quick chat with the band, and Macalino shared what it’s like performing the song inspired by the beautiful actress.
“I’m the man behind this crazy idea of a song. My band mates just rode with the idea, but I’m very happy for what just happened. I mean this is the privilege and bonus for being in a band, for being a song-writer, because how I write songs is always personal. Half of the people who follow Mayonnaise know that I wrote the song “Jopay.” It was a love song for the celebrity. With “Kathryn,” I wrote the song out of my admiration for Kathryn as an artist and as an actress, and in a way I was able to integrate that with my personal life. But I know that Kathryn belongs to DJ, and I belong to a [woman named] Ly, so it’s not reality. My admiration for a celebrity has its boundaries, so I’m just really happy that we’re able to perform the song in front of Kathryn,” said Macalino in a mix of Filipino and English.

Asked whether it was an objective of Macalino’s to perform one day the song in the presence of Kathryn, this is what he said. “At the end of the day, ang gusto ko lang naman malaman nila, because I know DJ is a musician as well that’s why I just wanted to give her a tribute, a song…Just a simple love song for someone who I don’t know but admire, and the fact na nandun siya parang bonus na lang yon (I just wanted them to know the song…Kathryn being there was just a bonus).”
But Macalino and co. were quick to acknowledge that it wasn’t just them who benefited from the One Music Live special. “The plus side of this is natutulungan yung mga aspiring artists. For example, yung One Music merong Be Discovered. It’s a huge lift for these artists na walang exposure, and to perform side by side with bigger artists like Kristel Fulgar, Kathryn Bernardo, and Daniel Padilla, yung mga batang banda…hindi mo na kailangan ng demo ngayon eh. May tamang oras at budget ka lang, gawa ng demo, upload mo online, yun na yung demo mo (This is one way of helping aspiring artists. For example, One Music has the Be Discovered segment. It’s a huge lift for these artists with no exposure, and to perform side by side with bigger artists, these young bands…they don’t need to make demos anymore. As long as you have the time and the right budget, you could just upload your work online, and that becomes your demo),” Macalino said.
Having now met the inspiration behind “Kathryn,” One Music PH asked Macalino if people could expect another song from the band out of last night’s special experience and privilege. “Of course, the joy and the fun of being able to perform for such a massive love team is an experience that I will never forget. The [new song] might not directly pertain to the experience [of playing for Kathryn], but the fact that I was able to spend half of my day with them (KathNiel) it’s a nice situation for me. And I thank my bandmates for allowing me to write a song like that. The good vibes will be carried over to the next album for sure,” the Mayonnaise lead vocals said.
Truth be told, the song “Kathryn” emits positive vibes to the listeners. What more of the resulting song and album from that unforgettable privilege of performing “Kathryn” for Kathryn?

It may seem that Karlos is out of place in One Music PH because he’s someone who can’t live without sports. Until of course, he realized that he is equally passionate with music as well. He may not admit it just yet, but Karlos loves Davie Bowie very much. Oh, and he runs a barbershop too.
