Early this week, Star Music launched the 17-year-old artist, Miguela, along with her debut album which features the carrier single “Wika Ko.”
In an intimate conversation with Miguela, who is also the founder of the fundraising platform Migmarks and Arts, she shared that she wanted her music to transcend to all ages, but especially of her age.
“I want them to be inspired with my music, especially with ‘Wika Ko,’ which is very important nowadays that despite differences, we must be proud of our language, as well as where we came from,” said Miguel who has been writing songs since she was 14.
“Wika Ko,” one of the eight tracks in her album, was written by Edwin Marollano, who wrote the ‘Himig Handog 2014’ Grand Prize Winner “Mahal Ko O Mahal Ako” that was interpreted by KZ Tandingan.
The other seven tracks in the album are range from falling in love and love of a mother and child. With five songs, music and lyrics written by her in English, “Subalit Bakit” — written in Tagalog, and “Ma Intindi” — which she co-wrote with Marollano.
While the album is now available in digital music stores, as well as streaming applications like Spotify, Miguela donates the net proceeds of its sale of the to Bantay Bata 163, a social welfare program of the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation that aims to protect disadvantaged and at-risk children through a nationwide network of social services.
“I chose Bantay Bata because it’s one of the foundations that I believe in,” she shared.
Miguela was discovered from joining Battle Of the Bands in her school, International School Manila (ISM). She was a finalist in the vocalist category in her freshman year, then in her sophomore year had joined a band called “Halfway Decent” that had made prelims, and she had been the Battle of the Bands second placer in her junior year.
Her first live performance was in July this year 2018 via ABS-CBN FM radio station MOR 101.9.
Miguela has been enjoying creating her own renditions of songs she covers. This is seen particularly in how she puts an acoustic twist to upbeat songs.
