Moophs, known to most of his close friends as simply Chris, came home to the Philippines a few years ago, leaving his life in Los Angeles behind, and starting anew in Manila. However, he didn’t leave everything behind in Los Angeles: he brought with him so much, including his musical talents, his instruments, and of course, his readiness to be part of Manila’s growing electronic scene.
One of the first things many people and fans ask about him is his stage name: Moophs. He explains that it was a shortened version of Morpheus, a name he chose to honor his beloved pet lizard who had passed, and perhaps in a way, to describe his eclectic, almost dream-like brand of music.
According to Chris, he had been playing numerous instruments since he was a child, and had been in numerous bands all throughout his life, shifting from one instrument to another, yet always coming back to the guitar and bass that he loved so much. He eventually found himself playing around with electronica, and soon started producing tracks and remixes as Moophs. He tries to distance himself away from “EDM,” saying that “it has a [bad] connotation of ‘club music,’” and instead classifies himself as electronica. According to him, at the time he had moved to the Philippines, Los Angeles was already getting sick of EDM, while Manila was only starting to embrace it. This gave him the opportunity to be ahead of the wave, and to take advantage of everything he knew from playing in LA.
One of the proudest moments in his career, Chris says, was when he played solo for the Malasimbo Festival last March. “It was a magical experience, playing for that crowd,” he says, and truly, despite the small crowd, it was an achievement for him to be able to play in a festival many would-be musicians vie for, especially as Moophs, who had only recently start playing for the local scene.
For his future plans with his music, he’s really hoping he could collab with or produce for anyone along the likes of KZ Tandingan, CRWN, Manila Killa, or maybe even Sam Concepcion. Hopefully, One Music PH can fulfill even some of his wishes in an upcoming Live Session.
