Tippy, whose real name is Stephanie Denise Dos Santos, started her career in the Philippine entertainment industry in 2009 as a singer/actress.
The 21-year-old host, who is under the ABS-CBN talent management arm, Star Magic, has done several television and big screen projects that showcased both of her talents in singing and acting. To name a few, she became part of the defunct musical-teleserye 1DOL, she was also part of the musical variety show ASAP, did the musical film I Do Bidoo Bidoo: Heto nAPO Sila!, and joined the 2013 Philippine Popular Music Festival where she interpreted Quest's entry, "Dati" with Sam Concepcion.
According to Tippy, being a VJ was a dream she did not know she had.
"I never knew that I'd be so enthralled with the hosting. Now, it's something that I really enjoy," she exclusively told OneMusicPH.
It was in the year 2013 when she first tried her luck on the ABS-CBN music channel.
"First year college ako nun. I was doing the movie 'Do Bidoo Bidoo.' They (MYX) told me, 'Parang mukha kang mataray.' I tried to explain, 'Hindi po, hindi po ako mataray.' Then, I did not get it," Tippy shared. (I was in first year college that time. I was doing the movie 'Do Bidoo Bidoo.' They told me, 'You look snob.' I tried to explain, 'No, I'm not.' Then, I did not get it.)
A year later, Tippy got a call from MYX for another audition and finally, after her second try, she made it.
In 2015, she was officially welcomed by the music channel as one of its new VJs along with Erica Abello and Diego Loyzaga, joining the roster of regulars, which that time, is comprised of Chino Lui Pio, Ai dela Cruz, and Robi Domingo.
The job has never been too hard for Tippy since her enthusiasm towards music has become her motivation to always look forward to doing well and even better.
"Mahilig ako sa music talaga so whenever I get to talk about the music that we play, the [music] videos that we play, most of the time, I really do know about it." she said. (I really love music so whenever I get to talk about the music that we play, the music videos that we play, most of the time, I really do know about it.) "Even with the artists we get to interview, most of the time, I really do know about them, especially the artists that I've been following."
One of her most recent experiences proves that Tippy knows what she's doing.
"I was able to interview Hailee Steinfield. I’m actually a really big fan of hers so I know her whole EP (extended play). Nung kinakausap ko siya, alam ko 'yung mga kanta niya talaga and I think that helps kasi to be in a world where music is remained focused you have to know what you are talking about," she shared. (I was able to interview Hailee Steinfield. I’m actually a really big fan of hers so I know her whole EP. When I talked to her, I am really familiar of her songs and I think that helps to be in a world where music is remained focused you have to know what you are talking about.)
For Tippy, as a VJ, "na-i-immerse ko 'yung sarili ko sa music." (I get to immerse myself into music)
"Ang dami kong nadi-discover sa kanila as artists. Ang dami ko ring nadi-discover na artists and kinds of music that I would not have discovered if I were not part of MYX," she said. (I get to discover a lot from them as artists. I also get to discover other artists and kids of music that I would not have discover if I were not part of MYX.)
Asked what's her most favorite among the interviews she has done so far, Tippy shared: "[With] Jessie J, as in! Though it wasn't even a one on one interview. It was just like I was part of the press."
"Pero iba yung pagka-down to earth niya. Parang kahit na andaming tao, kapag ikaw ang nagsasalita tinitingnan ka talaga niya sa mata and she is just so approachable that you wouldn't expect her to be that approchable kasi nga sya si Jessie J so I expected her to be more aloof. But to have her there in front of me looking into my eyes and talking directly to me was just mill experience," she told. (She's really down to earth. Even if there are a lot of people, when you're talking she'll look into your eyes and she is just approachable that wouldn't expect her to be that approchable because she is Jessie J so I expected her to be more aloof. But to have her there in front of me looking into my eyes and talking directly to me was just mill experience.)
Also part of her immersion iin her passion are being able to go on trips and watch and be part of concerts since these are just few of the perks she enjoys as a VJ.
"We just recently went to Boracay. The week before that we went to Zambales for the Summer Siren and there, we were able to meet different artists," she said.
With all these experiences, Tippy, whose just on her second year as a VJ, has mastered being comfortable with the camera, her audience, and the people she works with.
"It translates better because people want to see it as real as if you're talking to them through television and you're not just reading something," she said.
To aspiring VJs, Tippy's piece of advices are to "know your music well and if you don't make it from the first cut of audition, audition again because if you really want it, who knows? It might really be for you."
"Walang susuko, parang pag-ibig lang yan." she noted.
