The EP’s title Shoes Out The Door! was inspired by the group’s custom of leaving their shoes out the door of frontman Nhiko Viktor’s studio—a symbol that they attribute to being “on air” or “in the zone” as musicians and as a band.
In a recent MYXclusive interview, the promising band discussed the process of creating this huge milestone which they completed almost a year ago.
“Sobrang happy kami kasi nga we consider this EP as our first baby as a band. I think with everyone naman, putting out your first is always the best feeling, like debuting 'yung brainchild mo. To us it signifies the first actual milestone that we had as a band,” keyboardist and vocalist Nhiko Sabiniano said.
Leading the track list of the mini album is “Habits,” a captivating jam oozing with melodic riffs about breaking the cycle of a toxic relationship before losing oneself.
Aside from Nhiko, Nameless Kids is composed of Kyle Perry (guitar/vocals), Kim Allen (guitar/vocals), Tati De Mesa (bass), and Imay Alconaba (drums). During the MYX Awards 2021, they performed their single “Outlaws.” They are also set to headline the September 28 (Tuesday) episode of ABS-CBN Music, ABS-CBN Events, and One Music PH’s The Music Room series.
"From the day we started, we made a list ng mga goals namin for the future," Nhiko said. "Isa sa mga (nasa) list is ang ASAP stage. So nung nalaman namin na yung The Music Room naka-setup sa ASAP stage, doon namin na-realize that things are coming together.
"Even when I was walking in the backstage, we were walking to the stage from the long hallway, it kinda' felt that we were walking to a concert," Kyle added. "Oh my god. The crowd was virtual, but you know...It's like stepping stones to get there. That was surreal."
The band started with the pair of Nhiko and Kyle before Tati was referred to the two by producer-composer Kiko Salazar. The trio hit it off just by hanging out initially before they were eventually joined by Kim and Imay.
"After a year of jamming, we then talked about what kind of direction the band will take," Nhiko said. "And we started thinking ng pangalan, kasi siyempre doon nagsisimula identity ng band, yung tipong 'di mo pa naririnig yung music sa name pa lang dapat alam na. So we were at a coffeeshop after a session trying to come up with names. The combinations we came up with were so many w came up with about four-tofive that we liked, pero 'di pa din siya tumatama ng 'This is it!' Parang napagod ako kakaisip and the shop was about to close na, then naisip ko as a joke, 'Bakit hindi na lang tayo nameless?' Nag-hit sa amin yung irony. Kasi we've always been talking about the principles in our career that it's not about our names, it's not about being popular as individuals. It was always about finding an audience that would love our music and not love the band just because of us. Nag-start siya with a 'The', then we wanted to make it simpler, and I think removing the 'the' gave it less of an entitled meaning."
And even if the members come from different musical backgrounds, they are unified by their musical direction. "Even though we have differrent backgrounds, our sense of what works and what doesn't is similar," said Nhiko. "So even if, for example, galing sa hip-hop background si Kyle, 'pag mi-natch mo siya sa music namin ngayon, since nag-aagree kami in terms of taste, alam namin kung aling parts ng music niya yung magki-click sa music namin. It's a matter of which part of his roots and fit sa music. Same goes for Tati, Kim, and Imay. The sound of Nameless is about the music of each and every one of us and how they mix na hindi namin pinilit. Our sound is kinda' experimental in terms of the process, pero it's still very indie pop when it comes to the final product."
When asked about striking the delicate balance between being an indie-pop band and being in a mainstream platform such as ABS-CBN Music, Nhiko said, "Our love for the music isn't about the genre or the boundaries, for us what sounds good, sounds good."
"Basically, real will recognize real," Kyle added.
