After The Party (EP) is DJ-producer Arthur Tan’s first body of work, simply put as a cinematic take on coming of age in the big city manifested in four mood-setting house tracks. The first single, “Sleepwalking” was released independently in September 2020, setting the tone for a bigger story to tell. “City Runs” and “Night Cap” followed in 2021 and was released under Tarsier Records. Arthur Tan’s penchant for dreamy dance music sparked a creative flow in the midst of the pandemic, with him producing a new-yet nostalgic series of songs reminiscent of chapters in a night out magnified through sonical mise-en-scene.
According to Arthur: “The concept behind the EP was really trying to replicate or chase that post-party or post-night out feeling with your friends. Before the pandemic, I found that some of my favorite memories during my night’s out with my friends weren’t at the club or the bar itself but were actually the times after we’d leave late at night, after last call, still on a high from the club and headed to a house party, an after party, or just riding the wave of being happy that we all had a great night together and not ready to end the evening just yet. I really wanted to capture the story of how I felt during those post-club parties, hence the EP is called After the Party. The sonic identity was centered around a combination of synthwave/synth pop, minimalist house and a lot indie/dreamy dance music. My music influences for this EP, and in general, came a lot from Flight Facilities, Manila Killa, RAC and Goldroom for the dance music genre influences. On the other side, I was heavily influenced by The XX and the Postal Service - two of my biggest influences whenever I compose/produce music. A lot of my inspiration whenever I try to make a new song is based off of my love for young-adult films and novels growing up - there’s always that magical feeling they portray at the end of the film/book when it’s late at night and ready to close out the story. That’s the feeling I always try to replicate when I create music, a feeling that’s influenced a lot of my life growing up - musically and artistically.
I see each song playing at both house parties and night clubs/bars, I see them being played for beach parties with friends, road trip anthems for long drives, and overall the music you want to play when you’re out and living in the moment with the people closest to you.
I wanted to release the EP now because I feel like its the type of dance music that people may need at the moment, with everything that’s going on, some people (myself included) miss those feelings of late nights, miss that calming feeling and I think now would be a great time to remind everyone that those moments will come back soon, that they won’t be gone forever. For personal reasons, I believe this EP portrays another side of myself, a part that people don’t really see (considering my DJ career and how I would play in clubs and parties before) and it is something that I felt was authentic to me, a collection of songs that I can truly say I put myself into wholeheartedly.
This EP/Beat tape, being my first one ever, is my way of showing people the other side of me - the musically influences in my life that truly stuck to me the most. Being a club DJ for almost ten years now - my peers and people around the scene have always seen my artistry in a certain way, releasing these tracks and this EP is my way of expressing the other side of my musical identity, outside of what I would normally play as a club DJ in the past - a different side to Arthur Tan in a way.”
Arthur Tan is a Manila-raised, NYC-based producer and DJ with a penchant for ripping your heart out and giving it back to you stronger than ever. Arthur has been an artist, musician, and dancer for at least fifteen years, bringing a diversity and passion that manifests itself in his emotionally charged take on electronic house music.
He first made a name for himself by somehow performing at what seemed to be every single major university party in Metro Manila and moved on to cut his teeth in the Philippines’ thriving underground scene with Youngblood PH and the Logiclub Producer Collective. Whether you found him DJing for twenty people at a low-key pub or for hundreds in Black Market, The Palace, or Bacolod’s Masskara Festival, Arthur brought the same intensity to every performance. Simply put, Arthur knows exactly how to make you dance, and he isn’t afraid to make you feel things.
After making his mark in the Philippines, Arthur went on to pursue his craft in New York and quickly found his place performing all over Manhattan and Brooklyn in venues like Kinfolk 90, Kinfolk 94, the Vinyl, and Smithfield Hall. A month into his stay, Arthur had already picked up where he left off and spent the next two years making waves in the Empire State.
Even in the midst of the global pandemic, Arthur came home with a bang, releasing his first singles "Peace of Mind" (ft. vydd) and "Sleepwalking" in 2020. Old friends and new fans alike were introduced to a sound that was now distinctly Arthur’s, a new-but-nostalgic take on electronic house that brings the groove while laying the musical foundation for a movie scene to unfold with each track. With a growing swagger in his beats and an increasingly autobiographical approach to music, Arthur has come of age and is ready to tell the story.
