On the first #OneMusicSuggests of the year, we’re throwing back to 2015 with “Go On” by TheSunManager. After releasing a self-titled EP in 2014, the acoustic/folk singer-songwriter is now ready to release her debut album. Titled “Worth,” the album will be launched on February 10, 2017.
Check out the video for “Go On” below, and read on for our exclusive interview with April Hernandez on what’s to come for her newest album.
You last released your EP in 2014. What's changed for you since then, in terms of music and songwriting?
I've gotten to listen to a whole lot of music since I released the EP. The foundation still is based on Folk but I think I've gotten to incorporate different sounds and styles with this record. In terms of songwriting, compared to my EP (which was mostly like storytelling format), these set of songs I think would challenge people's perspectives and how they perceive things.
What can you reveal about your first album? How different will it be from the EP?
The music definitely is different. I designed the EP with a lighter note in mind; just to break in the local scene. The EP was more of a "pop" sounding record while Worth I think has a more diverse sound. I guess the best way I can describe the songwriting for this album is that it's closer to my song "In Darkness," that it tackles more of the introspective and existential views, how we view the world and how we see ourselves in it. This record, sonic-wise, is really a lot more daring than the first one I released. Before I just did everything on my own but with this one, I have my good friend Nick Lazaro (of La Balls Studio) as my co-producer. He really helped take the songs to a whole new level. My band played on the record as well and helped bring the songs to life.
Can you tell us about the first single off of "Worth"?
"Secrets" is going to be the first single off the album. It's really far from the usual shuffle associated with Folk music. It's like a combination of Folk, Rock, Pop, Post-rock. I can't really categorize it to one genre, haha. It's about how our perspective can really affect our mindset; things may appear to go bad but we can always choose to look at the bright side of things. It's kind of an empowering song for me. Haha.
Will there be any collaborations?
None. Maybe I'll do one for the next record. hehe
How are you feeling as February 10 approaches?
Mixed emotions actually. I'm excited and I'm anxious at the same time. You spend so much time and put so much of yourself into something, and now that's it's about to be released for the world to take in, I just hope the record does well.
