It's been almost a decade since "Master Rapper" and "King of Philippine Rap," Francis Magalona, passed away after his 44-year battle with leukemia. But for the Magalonas, his spirit is very much alive. Last October 4, the late rapper's family visited his final resting place to celebrate his birthday.
Each member of the family made their own special dedications to the late rapper, some of them with long messages, such as his wife, Pia.
Oct 4 is the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, for whom FrancisM was named. As is our tradition, we celebrated Holy Mass at his gravesite. Father Priest’s entire mass and homily was very well-received by our family. He injected irony as he regaled us with his anecdotes. In the end, we all were clearly reminded about our priorities in life. He also taught us to say the “1,2 and 3 words everyday to each other: 1. Sorry; 2. Thank you; and 3. I love you.” Just by doing that, we would easily find peace within ourselves. ❤️
While others kept it short and sweet, like Saab.
But one of the sweetest dedications was shared by Maxene, who posted several photos in memory of her late father.
In this last set, Maxene shared a snippet of herself and her siblings performing one of Francis M's most iconic hits, "Kaleidoscope World."
A rapper, songwriter and producer, Francis Magalona is best known for his 1990 album "Yo!" as well as hit song "Mga Kababayan Ko" (My Countrymen), in which he urges fellow Filipinos to be proud of their heritage, to work hard and strive for a better life.
The way in which Francis M composed his songs to bring attention to present-day issues in society made him one of the most politically conscious voices of his generation. This has inspired many hip-hop artists and rappers in the coming generations to tell their stories in a similar way--with detailed imagery and meaningful lyricism.
As many issues arise in today's society, more and more artists have emerged to share their craft, such as Al James, Third Flo', 727 Clique, and Ex-Battallion, who are performing in the upcoming digital concert One Music FRESH.
It is clear to see that Francis M has left his mark in the hearts of his family, friends, and fans. He is missed, always.
