With her recent stints as a part of Himig Handog and We Love OPM, Kaye Cal has slowly but steadily become a household name as one of OPM’s rising stars. What people may not know, however, is that Kaye has actually been in the industry for about six years now. Today, we take a look at Kaye Cal’s journey through the years…
Karen Jade “Kaye” Cal was born on February 11. She hails from Davao del Sur.
In 2010, she, along with her bandmates from Ezra Band joined Pilipinas Got Talent (PGT). Here, Filipino music fans started to notice Kaye’s unique talent, and she was dubbed “the voice of soul.” While the band did not win the grand finals, they did get a chance to be a part of “Pinoy You Got It” album, a compilation of songs from other PGT finalists.
Ezra Band eventually went on hiatus, but Kaye continued to release new music through videos on YouTube.
In 2015, her track “Isang Araw” became a part of “OPM Fresh,” an album featuring up-and-coming singers, which included Alex Diaz, Maris Racal, and Marlo Mortel among others.
The following year, she was chosen as an interpreter for the 2016 Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs competition. Kaye interpreted “Nyebe” by Aries Sales, and the song won a Star Music Choice Award.
On May 2016, a new reality music competition entitled “We Love OPM” was launched on ABS-CBN as a follow-up to “I Love OPM.” Here, Kaye was a part of a group with Marlo Mortel and Marion Aunor, and they were mentored by Nyoy Volante. Together as Team “Power Chords,” they performed hits from local OPM icons like Sharon Cuneta, Gary Valenciano, and APO Hiking Society.
Today, she continues to perform at various events, television guestings, and gigs around the Metro. She's definitely come a long way since 2010, but could a new album finally be in the works for this young star? Subscribe to onemusic.ph for more updates!
