Hearing a song on the radio or any device is one thing, but watching a music video is a totally different experience altogether. Although sound and music remain major elements in watching music videos, the center of the viewer’s attention focalizes on the visuals that are being presented. For that reason, music video watching almost always elicits anticipation and excitement from music fans because music videos show us an enhanced perspective towards songs and even music artists themselves. Here on “The One Music K.O. Round,” I shall be providing in-depth reviews of music videos to determine whether they’re a “Knockout” (really good), a “Letdown” (disappointing), or anything in between. As I am also an avid sports fan, I shall be using boxing terms to give my verdict on a music video’s overall appeal and impact.
While many consider Valentine’s Day as the time of the year when everybody becomes extra romantic, it’s also the season of second chances at love for some. With just less than a week to go before hearts day, I’ve decided to allocate this week’s edition of “The One Music K.O. Round” to do a tribute for those who’ve been casualties of what John Mayer would call as heartbreak warfare. Having said that, I think the perfect music video choice for this would be Solenn Heussaff’s “A Pocketful of Promises.” Without further ado, let’s find out if the music video will get a K.O.!
Watch the music video of “A Pocketful of Promises” in the YouTube video below.
Anything that has Solenn in it is bound to become a lot more beautiful. That’s definitely the case with the music video of “A Pocketful of Promises,” but you might be surprised that Solenn’s physical beauty is not the only thing worth paying attention to in the MV. Although it’s easy to get lost in the goddess-like face of Solenn, the music video actually showcases the versatility of her artistry. In fact, when I was about to watch it for the very first time, I thought there were a few promises (pun intended in relation to the song’s title) surrounding the music video that were fulfilled by the end: that Solenn is a legitimate singer, and her artistry extends far beyond modeling. Allow me to explain why while integrating various elements of the music video along the way.
I have to say, I was one of the people who took Solenn’s singing abilities for granted. But after listening to “A Pocketful of Promises,” I instantly became a believer as she can absolutely sing! It wasn’t just because Solenn can hit various notes of the songs accurately, but you could also feel the sorrow and anxiety in her voice which are emotions found in the song itself. Of course, with sorrow and anxiety, there is always room for hope which is the light at the end of the tunnel that “A Pocketful of Promises” wishes to remind to the song’s listeners. And I believe you also feel that hope in Solenn’s voice.
Of course, when we speak of music videos, the visuals are what the audience pay more attention to. In “A Pocketful of Promises,” our focus is pretty much locked onto Solenn as she is practically found in every second of the music video. Let’s get one thing straight here. Although I wouldn’t mind seeing Solenn the entire time, I felt that the music video needed at least one more character that she interacted with just to add more depth, and a different perspective. It was just Solenn all throughout, and there was a point in the music video that you’d feel like she’s a martyr of some sort. Fortunately, Solenn’s acting and on point facial expressions made up for it. You could tell from her facial expressions from beginning to end that her state of mind (or heart) was going through a journey from worse to better which is parallel to the theme of the song in my opinion. For that, Solenn has to be lauded. As for the overall concept of the music video, if you’re someone who’s been through heartaches and relationship dead ends, “A Pocketful of Promises” is something worth watching as it simply understands what you’re going through, but at the same time injects you with a glimmer of hope that everyone deserves on Valentine’s Day.
I also enjoyed the Easter egg that they inserted in the music video. Not everyone knows that Solenn is a gifted painter, and I was amazed that they were able to include that side of her in the music video. That just goes to show that Solenn is undeniably an artist with an arsenal of talents that she utilized to perfection in “A Pocketful of Promises.” I’d have to say that like what Solenn’s character did by the end of the music video, she has every reason to smile indeed.
I think Solenn’s artistry flexed its muscle in the music video of “A Pocketful of Promises.” The overall production does have a minor glitch because I truly believe that it lacks a supporting character, but that’s forgivable if you look at the music video holistically. I’d have to say “A Pocketful of Promises” delivers a solid music video that fulfills several promises regarding Solenn’s artistry, especially in the musical sense, and so it warrants a “Unanimous Decision” verdict from me.
