British rock band Cream, formed back in 1966, is often credited to be the first-ever musical supergroup. A supergroup, defined simply, is a musical group that consists of members that already have successful solo careers prior to creating the band.
"Tears in Heaven" is a ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother's friend, on March 20, 1991.
That said, Cream was composed of bassist Jack Bruce, guitarist Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker. It was at the insistence of Baker—who had already earned a reputation for melding jazz styles with African rhythms and being regarded as “rock’s first superstar drummer”—that Bruce and Clapton came on board. At that time, Clapton and Bruce had already found success in their previous groups, but together, the trio easily became renowned the world over, selling 15 million records worldwide, and being inducted into numerous “greatest” lists, including the 1993 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as VH1 and Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists Of All Time.”
This DVD contains two complete and very different concerts by Jack Bruce filmed for the German TV series Rockpalast. The first concert, filmed at the Grugahalle in Essen on 19 October 1980, features a stellar band of Clem Clempson (guitars), Billy Cobham (drums) and David Sancious (keyboards), a line-up that had come together for the album "I've Always Wanted To Do This" earlier in the year.
