Sharon Cuneta has been a well-known icon in the Filipino music scene ever since she topped the Philippine Pop charts, the year she started. From 1978 until today, she has enjoyed nationwide renown for her talent both in music and in acting. Until now, despite her lessened activity in the music scene, she continues to exert influence on many artists, with them citing her as one of their main influences.
Undoubtedly, the Megastar has gone through so much, starting from her younger years. And now that she just marked the first golden years of her life at age 50, how much of her music has changed, and how much of these changes have affected her life?
Last Sunday, ASAP hosted an #ASAPMegaParty, to commemorate the birthday of the golden Megastar, and to pay tribute to all her contributions to the industry. As part of the lengthy and heartfelt tribute, several artists, from Martin Nievera, to Piolo Pascual, to Erik Santos, and to Toni Gonzaga, all sang the songs that Sharon popularized during her active years.
Dear Heart, released in 1981, was written in tandem with the debut film of the same name, starring a teenage Sharon Cuneta learning about love for the first time.
The next song performed, Kahit Konting Pagtingin, was released in 1996 and was in tandem with a film starring the Megastar herself once more, alongside the late and legendary FPJ. This time, Sharon’s character, a beautiful actress, falls for that of FPJ’s, her supposed bodyguard and driver. Their relationship was supposed to be strictly professional, but end up complicating and endangering their lives.
Both Sides Now, originally written and popularized by US folk singer Joni Mitchell in 1967, and popularized in the Philippines by Sharon during 1999. It was used as the theme song for one of her movies Magkapatid, released in 2002. The film stars Sharon and Juday as sisters, constantly bickering, but remain best friends and close family members till the end, almost as if they’re two sides of the same coin, very similar to the song.
Something New in My Life, originally sung by Stephen Bishop in 2003, was sung by the Megastar in 2013 for her husband, to show how far and how strong they’ve gone as a couple. It’s just super "nakakakilig," especially for fans of the power pair.
The last song performed in ASAP, Starlight, featured Sharon’s daughters. Indeed, the best was saved for last, with all the performers coming together to sing along with the Megastar, as if to remind her that just like in the song, they will always be a family, wherever and in whatever situation they may be.
The Megastar has lived for 50 wondrous years; full of music, life, and love. Surely, for the next to come, it will be filled with just as much magic. So if you aren’t familiar with her songs, now is the best time to get to know the music, and the beautiful Star behind them all. Watch the stunning performance here:
